It’s no longer enough to be beautiful. Today’s It Girl must be witty, culturally fluent, and relatable but still uber-rich. The modern It Girl no longer needs to dominate the club scene or churn out daily OOTDs. Instead, she’s defined by a feeling. You know her when you see her.

Romy Mars (born Romy Croquet Mars) is the internet’s new favorite obsession. Recently dubbed by Vulture as “the ultimate nepo baby,” she is the eldest daughter of the dreamy, feminine-forward film director Sofia Coppola and the lead singer of the French indie pop band Phoenix, Thomas Mars.

Being born of film, fashion, and French pop lineage alone puts her on the “It Girl” radar. But while being Sofia Coppola’s daughter sparked the conversation, it’s Romy’s own cheeky humor and cool girl energy that keeps the people watching. Instead of shying away from the privilege that comes with being a celebrity kid, she embraces it. With TikTok posts like the giddy selfie video she posted with a text caption saying “When I can’t find a good going out purse and realize Sofia Coppola’s closet is upstairs,” while the hysterically brass crass “At A Medium Pace” by Adam Sandler is the audio choice, her chaotic and oddly self-aware online persona gives a blink and you-miss-it glimpse into what could only be described as nepo baby satire.

In an era obsessed with perfected aesthetics, there’s something irresistibly intriguing about someone leaning into the freedom of being imperfect. Romy first made waves back in 2023, when she uploaded a now-infamous TikTok confessing that she’d been grounded for trying to charter a helicopter with her dad’s credit card. It was deleted almost immediately, but the cultural effect lingered: Who is this girl?

Her recent pop music debut is also helping to carve out her own lane. Her single “A-Lister” has her being described by many online users as a creative genius. Her entire presence seems almost accidentally curated. A sort of Tumblr-era throwback in an age of TikTok virality. Her wardrobe, when we see it, is unfussy. Her energy is unbothered.

So … is Romy the new It Girl? Maybe. Or maybe she’s the anti-It Girl: elusive, ethereal, and uninterested in the game altogether. Either way, she represents a shift. And if we’re being honest? That might be the most stylish move of all.
