The 2026 Met Gala Theme Has Finally Been Revealed
By Alexus Mosley
The 2026 Met Gala is officially set for Monday, May 4, 2026, and its newly revealed theme, “Costume Art,” places fashion squarely in conversation with art history.
Inspired by the idea that clothing is more than clothing but an art form, The Met’s curators built the exhibition around the dressed body as a unifying thread across the museum’s 5,000-year collection. Here, garments and bodies become artworks themselves.
The exhibition will explore three key body types:
• bodies frequently depicted in art
• bodies often overlooked (including aging and pregnant bodies)
• and the universal anatomical form
Expect a red carpet filled with sculptural silhouettes, anatomical references, and designs that treat the body as canvas rather than a mannequin.
In essence, the 2026 Met Gala’s “Costume Art” theme elevates fashion into cultural sculpture, less a costume party, more a dialogue between what we wear and the stories bodies tell.
