Anifa Mvuemba Pauses Hanifa Production Indefinitely After 15 Years in Business

After building one of the most recognizable independent fashion brands of the last decade, Anifa Mvuemba is choosing stillness. The Hanifa founder has announced an indefinite pause in production, marking a significant turning point for the label she has led for nearly 15 years. Known for sculptural silhouettes, inclusive sizing, and unapologetic color, Hanifa has long stood at the intersection of femininity and modern Black luxury. But lately, the conversation around the brand has shifted.

Following November’s annual “Hanifa Friday” sale (which included pre-order pieces), customers began raising concerns about extended shipping timelines. While pre-orders typically require patience, manufacturing delays reportedly complicated fulfillment, leaving some customers waiting longer than expected. Online frustration grew, and what began as logistical discourse evolved into larger conversations about the pressures facing independent brands.

Yet Mvuemba’s recent statement suggests the pause is about more than operations. “I don’t really feel inspired right now,” she shared, before reflecting more personally on the years she has devoted to building the company, and what that devotion has cost her in time away from family and her children. Rather than offering polished certainty, she offered honesty: she is still sitting with the question of what comes next.

That vulnerability feels especially poignant given Hanifa’s cultural impact. The brand’s 3D digital runway show during the pandemic was not only innovative but shifted how audiences thought about presentation, technology, and accessibility in fashion. For many, Hanifa became a symbol of what independent Black designers could accomplish without traditional gatekeepers.

Now, after welcoming her second child, Mvuemba appears to be recalibrating. This moment raises a broader question: What does sustainability look like not just for brands, but for the women building them?
