The Tiny Plaid Skirt Had a Chokehold on the ’90s

Forget about the chokehold the tiny plaid skirt had on the 90s? As if! It didn’t just dominate the decade, it practically became the unofficial uniform of the decade’s It Girls. Somewhere between prep school fantasy, supermodel off-duty style, and teen movie chaos, plaid minis appeared everywhere from runways, sitcoms, red carpets, to the hallways of fictional high schools we all secretly wished we attended. One minute Clueless gave us Cher Horowitz twirling through Beverly Hills in coordinated plaid sets, and the next, supermodels like Claudia Schiffer were pairing tartan minis with black tights and tiny knit tops. Even Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel Green had her own plaid skirt era on Friends.

If we had to guess, we’d say the trend thrived because it perfectly captured the mood of ’90s fashion. It was playful, a little rebellious, slightly flirtatious, and weirdly polished all at once. Designers leaned heavily into schoolgirl-inspired silhouettes, while pop culture transformed plaid into something aspirational rather than ordinary. Suddenly, every cool girl wanted knee socks, loafers, fuzzy sweaters, and a plaid mini skirt that looked like it belonged in either a teen rom-com or backstage at Fashion Week.

Even today, the remnants of the plaid mini skirt phase can be found throughout fashion and pop culture. Every few years, fashion rediscovers the plaid mini skirt and pretends it’s brand new again. But the girls who grew up worshipping Cher Horowitz, Rachel Green, and late-’90s runway style know its true influence. Looks like the plaid mini skirts will always be that girl.
