Fashion has given us plenty of unforgettable moments. Princess Diana’s revenge dress, Kate Moss redefining the slip dress, and a restaurant dedicated to style. Then there was the time Lady Gaga arrived at the MTV Video Music Awards wearing raw meat. Yes, actual meat.

On September 12, 2010, Gaga stepped onto the VMAs red carpet in a dress made entirely from raw beef, instantly creating one of the most talked-about fashion moments of the 21st century. More than a decade later, people still reference “the meat dress” without needing any further explanation. That alone is enough to earn it a place in Fashion’s Hall of Fame. At the time, Gaga was at the peak of her career with a reputation for turning every award she attended into performance art. You could expect every appearance to include a fashion look that sparked conversation. But this red carpet became the most extreme extension of her artistic vision.

Designed by Franc Fernandez and styled by Nicola Formichetti, the look featured slabs of raw beef draped into a dress silhouette, matching boots, a meat clutch, and even a fascinator crafted from steak. It was shocking, bizarre, impossible to ignore, and stinky, according to some.

Naturally, the reactions were immediate and broad. Many called it genius, while others said it was disgusting. PETA called for social ostracism, stating it was “highly offensive and a waste of life .” Fashion commentators spent weeks debating whether it was art, activism, or simply provocation for provocation’s sake. Today, the public is still undecided. Gaga later explained that the outfit was intended as a a political protest against the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Whether people agreed with the message or not, the dress had forced an entire culture to stop and discuss it.

Gaga’s meat dress remains refreshingly unpredictable. Weird, risky, completely unforgettable, and somewhat of a fashion artifact. Fashion’s Hall of Fame isn’t reserved only for the prettiest dresses, but also for the garments that changed the conversation entirely. Love it or hate it, Lady Gaga’s meat dress did exactly that.
