Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2027 in Living Color

By Alexus Mosley

Minimalism quietly slipped out the back door while Marc Jacobs threw open every window.

For Spring 2027, the designer known for his juxtaposition of campy meets grunge reminded us that color is key in fashion. With glossy magenta skirts, lavender tights, transparent layers, oversized proportions, and enough saturated color to make a box of crayons feel underdressed, this collection feels playful, nostalgic, and unmistakably Marc Jacobs.

Appropriately titled “Gratitude,” the off-calendar collection served as both a thank-you note and a creative autobiography. “Creating, as an act of gratitude, is my truest form of self-expression,” Jacobs wrote in his show notes. “With every opportunity, I hope to offer a little light, shine, color, beauty, and joyful exuberance in return for the people, experiences, and moments that have shaped me.” That spirit could be felt in nearly every look.

One of the show’s biggest strengths was its willingness to embrace contradiction. Not surprising, but a gift nonetheless. Mini skirts with dramatic volume in a way that we didn’t know was possible while transparent shirts softened glossy coated trousers, polka-dot tulle floated beneath structured bodices, and delicate chain belts draped over lacquered fabrics, adding movement and a touch of playful glamour. Very 90s.

Longtime Marc Jacobs admirers also had plenty to smile about. Remembering where fashion has been while imagining where it could go next, Jacobs curated a conversation between decades of fashion history. His show notes referenced influences ranging from Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz to Yves Saint Laurent’s Spring 1993 collection, Chanel Spring 1993, Junya Watanabe Spring 1996, Prada Spring 2007, and perhaps most meaningfully, his own Marc Jacobs collections from Spring 1998 and Spring 2000, along with his Louis Vuitton Spring 2009 designs. Marc Jacobs offered something wonderfully refreshing: permission to have fun again. And for that, we have much gratitude.
