Zoë Kravitz Just Made Us Want to Dress Like It’s 1997 Again

Zoë Kravitz’s latest New York look makes dressing chic appear suspiciously easy.
Spotted out in the city, Kravitz wore what may be the oldest formula in the cool-girl handbook: a cropped white T-shirt, perfectly relaxed blue jeans and black accessories. Nothing revolutionary on paper. On Zoë? Suddenly, we’re reconsidering everything in our closets.
The actress paired her barely-there white tee with low-slung, straight-leg denim that feels plucked directly from a late-’90s street-style photograph. Rather than reaching for sneakers or loafers, Kravitz gave the casual combination a polished twist with black suede ballerina pumps from The Row.
And these aren’t your typical delicate ballet flats. The slightly higher vamp and block heel give the shoes an almost retro, ladylike quality that makes the relaxed denim feel instantly more intentional.

She finished the look with Saint Laurent’s black Hortense Hobo leather shoulder bag and a pair of Thistles sunglasses, keeping the entire accessory palette black. Her loosely pulled-up braids and minimal styling only add to the sense that she threw everything on and walked out the door.
Of course, achieving that particular brand of effortlessness tends to require considerably more thought than it lets on.
What makes the outfit work is the contrast. The tiny tee and faded jeans are quintessentially casual, while the structured black shoes and glossy Saint Laurent bag bring sophistication. There’s a little Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy minimalism, a little downtown New York and enough ’90s cool to make us want to dig through the denim section of a vintage store immediately.
Kravitz has long understood that personal style doesn’t require an outfit to contain a dozen talking points. Sometimes all you need is a white T-shirt, great jeans, black accessories and the confidence to leave well enough alone.
