Fashion's Hall of Fame: Gwen Stefani's 2001 Billboard Music Awards Look

By Alexus Mosley

In December 2001, Gwen Stefani arrived at the Billboard Music Awards as the frontwoman of No Doubt and a fashion phenomenon. In true peak Y2k form, she was simultaneously glam-rock and street-stylish. (What an era!)

With a sleek, high ponytail snatched tight at the crown with crisp cat-eye liner, a glossy red lip, and razor-clean brows, her beauty choices of the night mirrored the attitude of her clothes. Styled by Andrea Lieberman, the “Just a Girl” singer was sporty-glam on top with a white triangle bikini top with black stripe accents and a cropped white satin jacket with her initials and phrases embroidered in Old English graffiti.

Staying true to her SoCal punk princess roots, her bottoms consisted of low-rise, red and black houndstooth trousers with a slouchy waist fit and relaxed leg, perfect for rocking out with her bandmates. To complete the look were layered pearls, gold chains, and pendants, plus a crystal-studded chain belt with medallions and hanging strands.

The result was a thesis on how the turn of the millennium brought forth an era of rebellion, individuality, and unapologetic fun. And no one embodied that better than Gwen Stefani.
