In a deeply personal moment that has captivated audiences around the world, Michelle Obama revealed she and Barack Obama had planned to see their longtime friends, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner on the very night the couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home.

The former First Lady shared the startling detail during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on December 15, 2025, just one day after the tragic deaths of the revered filmmaker and his wife. “We’ve known them for many, many years and were supposed to be seeing them that night last night,” Michelle told host Jimmy Kimmel, describing the heartbreak of receiving the news instead of meeting them.

Michelle Obama went on to pay a touching tribute to the couple, calling Rob and Michele “some of the most decent, courageous people you ever want to know.”

The Reiners, beloved across Hollywood, politics, and arts communities, were discovered with fatal stab wounds in their Brentwood residence on December 14, 2025. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested shortly afterward and has since been charged with their murders, according to authorities.

Friends, colleagues, and admirers from across the cultural landscape have since shared tributes, recalling the couple’s decades-long contributions to film, activism, and the lives of those they touched.
