British heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua was injured in a serious car crash in Nigeria on Monday, December 29, 2025, that killed two people and left others injured, local authorities confirmed.
The 36-year-old former two-time world heavyweight champion was traveling as a passenger in a Lexus SUV on the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State when the vehicle collided with a stationary truck. According to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and police statements, the SUV lost control during an overtaking maneuver and struck the car.
Joshua, who was seated in the back of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, authorities said. Two other passengers in the car were killed at the scene, while additional occupants were injured but survived.
A video circulating on social media appears to show Joshua being helped out of the damaged vehicle and getting into an emergency vehicle following the collision, although his exact condition has not been fully detailed by his team.
The crash occurred just over a week after Joshua’s high-profile knockout win over YouTube-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, a fight that garnered widespread attention. Joshua, who holds British and Nigerian heritage, was reportedly visiting Nigeria following that bout.
Police and road safety officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with preliminary findings indicating that excessive speed and an unsafe overtaking attempt were contributing factors.
No official statement has yet been issued by Joshua’s management team, and details about the identities of the deceased passengers have not been released. Further updates are expected as authorities and his camp provide more information.
