Rapper Mystikal Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison Following Guilty Plea in 2022 Rape Case

Rapper Mystikal has been sentenced to 20 years in prison following his guilty plea in connection with a 2022 rape case. According to multiple reports, the Louisiana rapper, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, was sentenced on Tuesday, June 16, after pleading guilty earlier this year to third-degree rape, a reduced charge from the original first-degree rape accusation.
During the sentencing hearing, the victim reportedly asked the court to impose the maximum sentence allowed. According to local reports, Tyler responded by saying, “If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence.”
The plea agreement was reached in March after prosecutors reduced the original charge. In exchange, several additional charges related to the case were dropped, including allegations of false imprisonment, domestic abuse battery by strangulation, simple robbery, and criminal property damage. The charges stemmed from an August 2022 incident at Tyler’s home in Prairieville, Louisiana. Authorities alleged that an acquaintance of the rapper was sexually assaulted following an altercation. Investigators claimed the woman suffered minor injuries and reported being physically attacked before the assault occurred.
Just days before sentencing, Tyler’s legal team reportedly attempted to withdraw his guilty plea, arguing that he did not have enough time to fully consider the consequences of the agreement and was under significant emotional distress when he accepted the deal. The request was ultimately unsuccessful.
The latest conviction marks another chapter in the rapper’s lengthy legal history. Tyler previously served time in federal prison following a 2003 sexual assault conviction. He was later indicted on separate rape and kidnapping charges in 2017, though those proceedings were unrelated to the current case.
Mystikal rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s with hits including “Shake Ya Ass” and “Danger (Been So Long).” He is now expected to serve the 20-year sentence handed down by the Louisiana court.
