Naomi Osaka’s Jellyfish-Inspired Australian Open Look Was a Symbol of Transformation

Naomi Osaka has never treated the tennis court as separate from self-expression, and her 2026 Australian Open entrance proved exactly why.

The Grand Slam champion arrived at the tournament wearing an elaborate, jellyfish-inspired ensemble designed by fashion visionary Robert Wun. The multi-piece look was sculptural and emotional, with a deeply personal origin. A wearable story layered in symbolism, if you will.

Osaka revealed to Vogue that the inspiration began at home, while reading a marine-life story to her daughter. One image, in particular, sparked something meaningful. “There was an image of a jellyfish, and when I showed it to her, she got so excited,” Osaka shared. From there, the concept evolved into something far more expansive.

The oceanic look featured a tie-dye turquoise and green zip-up adorned with organic, tendril-like details cascading from the sleeves, layered over a coordinating racerback. A pleated miniskirt sat atop wide-leg white pants, creating a fluid silhouette that moved effortlessly with her body. The most striking element came in the form of an oversized hat, complete with a dramatic brim, gauzy white veil, and delicate butterflies perched atop, a detail suggested by Wun, that carried special emotional weight.

After exchanging mood boards, Wun referenced a moment from the Australian Open in 2021 when a butterfly famously landed on Osaka’s face mid-match — a serene, viral moment she gently handled with grace. “I wanted to revisit that story and weave it into this design,” Wun explained, calling it a symbol of softness, focus, and beauty under pressure. Osaka described the overall concept as inspired by exoskeletal creatures, which she uses as a metaphor for rebirth and protection. “The birth of something new,” she said. “It felt symbolic of energy, transformation, and excitement.”

In true Styled Chat fashion, the look went beyond fashion and told a story of evolution. Serving as the perfect reminder that style, when intentional, can tell stories far beyond the surface.
