There are birthday dresses, and then there’s the birthday dress. Paris Hilton’s shimmering Julien Macdonald minidress is exactly that, rightfully earning its place in Fashion’s Hall of Fame.

Worn in 2002 during the London stop of Paris the Heiress’s legendary six-city birthday tour for her 21st birthday, the slinky, asymmetrical dress didn’t just complement the party. It became the party. Glamorous, daring, playful, and unapologetically over-the-top, it’s pretty much everything we still adore about Y2k fashion: confidence, sparkle, and the belief that if you’re partying non-stop, your outfit should announce it before you do.

Designed by British fashion designer Julien Macdonald, the custom creation shimmered with thousands of crystals on mesh cloth, featuring a plunging cowl neckline, delicate halter straps, and an open back that seemed to catch every flash of light in the room, making us all go, “That’s hot!”

Of course, no Paris Hilton look was ever just about the dress. The finishing touches were a crystal choker, a tiny tiara, blush satin heels, and a miniature pink handbag. Adding to why the dress has never left the style chat. So iconic is the look that when Kendall Jenner celebrated her own 21st birthday in 2016, she paid tribute to Hilton by wearing a custom reimagining of the now-iconic design, an acknowledgment that this fashion moment is now textbook style history.

Now, more than two decades later, it continues to sparkle as brightly as the night it first stole the spotlight. And that’s precisely what earns it a place in Fashion’s Hall of Fame.
