3 Lessons We Learned From Charlotte York

By Alexus Mosley

Charlotte York may have been called old-fashioned, overly idealistic, and occasionally a little too committed to the fantasy, but perhaps our favorite Park Avenue princess was onto something. While everyone around her became increasingly comfortable with complicated relationships and romantic cynicism, Charlotte remained remarkably clear about what she wanted: love, marriage, family and a beautiful life to share with someone.

She certainly didn’t get everything right, but beneath the pearls, perfectly coordinated outfits and extensive list of requirements was a woman who refused to apologize for wanting more. And in the age of dating apps, situationships and collective romantic exhaustion, a little Charlotte York wisdom might be exactly what we need.

1. Be Unapologetic About What You Want

Charlotte wanted marriage, children, romance and the whole happily-ever-after package—and she wasn’t going to pretend she wanted something more casual just because everyone else did. There’s something refreshing about refusing to perform indifference when you actually care. Charlotte knew the life she wanted, and she wasn’t embarrassed to say so.

2. Maintain High Standards

Okay, Charlotte could occasionally take the checklist a little far. But the fundamental lesson holds: wanting to be treated well isn’t being difficult. Knowing your values, establishing boundaries and expecting a partner who genuinely meets your needs isn’t asking for too much. Sometimes the answer isn’t lowering the bar. It’s waiting for someone worthy of clearing it.

3. Stay Optimistic Despite Modern Dating Fatigue

Perhaps Charlotte’s greatest strength was that disappointment never completely embarrassed the romantic out of her. Bad dates, heartbreak, divorce and plenty of frogs didn’t stop her from believing something wonderful was still possible. In a dating culture increasingly fluent in ghosting, situationships and romantic cynicism, maintaining a little optimism might be the most Charlotte York thing we can do.

Charlotte’s love life was never as picture-perfect as the one she’d imagined, but that was the point. She eventually discovered that getting the life you want doesn’t always mean getting it exactly the way you pictured it. But through all of it, she remained hopeful, maintained her standards, and never pretended not to want love simply because wanting it made her vulnerable.

Charlotte wasn’t hopelessly romantic after all. Just hopeful.
