When Sarah Jessica Parker Changed 15 Times at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards

Believe it or not, outfit changes weren’t always a part of award show culture. So imagine the audience’s surprise when Sarah Jessica Parker made changing clothes an entire show. On June 3, 2000, at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, the rising pop culture and fashion icon hosted the MTV Movie Awards, turning it into a full-blown fashion marathon. Stepping out in 15 different looks throughout the event, she made the night one to remember.

With the coolest clothes, trendy references, and slightly chaotic humor, she opened the show in a way totally appropriate for an MTV production taking place during the turn of the millennium. Blending Sex and the City with The Matrix, Parker appeared as Carrie Bradshaw “caught in the Matrix,” joined by familiar faces and surprise cameos from Jimmy Fallon, Vince Vaughn, and Laurence Fishburne. So meta and excessive, and so MTV. The opening set the tone, but the wardrobe carried. Across the night, Sarah Jessica Parker rotated through 15 outfits, pulling from the hottest designers such as Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier, Calvin Klein, and Richard Tyler. And because subtlety wasn’t exactly the theme, at one point, she even appeared on stage in a towel. Talk about performance.
