Hayden Panettiere Responds to Claims She “Abandoned” Daughter Kaya After Custody Decision

By Alexus Mosley

For years, Hayden Panettiere’s custody arrangement with ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko has been reduced online to one cruel word: abandonment. Now, the actress is finally pushing back. During a deeply emotional appearance on On Purpose with Jay Shetty, Hayden addressed the long-discussed decision to relinquish custody of her daughter Kaya, now 11, while battling postpartum depression, anxiety, and addiction. The actress explained that the narrative surrounding the situation has been painful and wildly oversimplified.

According to Hayden, the decision was never about not loving her daughter. Instead, it came during one of the darkest periods of her life, when she felt unable to properly care for herself, let alone a child. Kaya has lived primarily with Klitschko in Europe since 2018, and Hayden says the 11-year-old has built a stable life there, learning multiple languages, making friends, horseback riding, and thriving academically.

The actress also emphasized that she still maintains a loving relationship with her daughter and continues to co-parent alongside Klitschko, whom she described as a close friend.  The renewed conversation arrives as Hayden prepares to release her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, where she opens up about childhood fame, addiction, abusive relationships, postpartum depression, and the death of her younger brother, Jansen, in 2023.

But beyond celebrity headlines, the story has also sparked broader conversations online about the way motherhood is judged publicly, especially when mental health struggles are involved. The internet often praises women for “doing it all,” but rarely leaves room for honesty about burnout, addiction, depression, or survival. Hayden’s story is messy, painful, and deeply human, and that may be exactly why it continues to resonate.
