When most people think about Princess Diana’s iconic “revenge dress” moment, they picture the sleek black dress and the unforgettable confidence she radiated while stepping out in London in 1994. But now, another detail from that legendary night is becoming part of fashion and pop culture history all over again. And it’s the car that brought her there.
The green Jaguar XJ40 Sovereign that transported Diana to London’s Serpentine Gallery the same evening she wore the now-famous dress is officially heading to auction on June 1. The luxury vehicle, which reportedly remained part of the royal fleet until 1997, is expected to sell for somewhere between £50,000 and £150,000.
And yes, the car still carries remnants of its royal past.
According to reports, the Jaguar retains roof mounting points once used for the Royal Standard flag, along with a Motorola car phone featuring a discreet button labeled “Security.” The vehicle was reportedly delivered directly to Diana’s household at Kensington Palace in 1994 and has had only one private owner since leaving royal service.
The sale has reignited fascination surrounding one of the most iconic celebrity fashion moments of all time. Diana’s so-called “revenge dress” appearance has lived in pop culture history for decades due to its timing. On the very same evening Prince Charles publicly admitted to infidelity during a televised interview, Diana stepped out in the daring off-the-shoulder black dress that would instantly become symbolic of reinvention, confidence, and independence.
In the years since her death, Princess Diana memorabilia has only continued to grow in value and cultural significance. Recent auctions featuring gowns, handbags, handwritten notes, and other personal belongings from the late Princess of Wales have collectively generated millions of dollars worldwide.
Apparently, even the getaway car from one of fashion’s most unforgettable nights has become a collectible.
