Actress Hayden Panettiere, whose career spanned more than three decades and included memorable roles in Remember the Titans, Heroes, Nashville, and the Scream franchise, has died at age 36. Panettiere died Sunday, August 16, her family confirmed in a statement issued through her publicist. A cause of death has not been announced, and her death is under investigation.
For a generation that grew up watching her onscreen, Panettiere was a familiar face long before she became a household name. She began acting as a child and voiced Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life before appearing in films including Remember the Titans. But her major television breakthrough came in 2006 when she starred as Claire Bennet, the seemingly indestructible cheerleader at the center of NBC’s Heroes.
And if you were coming of age in the 2000s, chances are Hayden Panettiere appeared somewhere in your pop-culture orbit. From teen movies and magazine covers to red carpets and primetime television, she became one of those stars who seemed to grow up alongside her audience. Her career moved effortlessly between quintessentially 2000s projects and more adult roles, allowing viewers who first knew her as a child star to continue following her well into adulthood.
Panettiere later found another defining role as country singer Juliette Barnes on ABC’s Nashville. Her portrayal of the ambitious, complicated, and often vulnerable star earned her two Golden Globe nominations in 2013 and 2014. She also became a fan favorite in the Scream franchise as Kirby Reed, appearing in Scream 4 and later returning to the franchise.
Her career ultimately stretched from childhood stardom through some of the most recognizable television and film moments of the 2000s and 2010s. Her final screen appearance came in the 2026 psychological thriller Sleepwalker. Earlier this year, she also released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.
Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, and her parents. Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at the age of 28.
For millions of viewers, Hayden Panettiere wasn’t simply an actress whose work they watched. She was part of the television, movies, and celebrity culture that defined an era, and a star many of us quite literally grew up with.
She will be missed.
