Pop Culturette Flashback: When Beyoncé Turned the 2011 VMAs Into a Pregnancy Reveal

At the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, Beyoncé staged one of the most memorable celebrity pregnancy reveals of the pre-Instagram boom.
The singer arrived on the black carpet in a flowing orange Lanvin gown, subtly cradling her stomach and sending fans into immediate shock. But in true Beyoncé fashion, the Queen Bee saved the real confirmation for her second home, the stage.

That night, she performed “Love on Top” in a sparkling purple blazer, white shirt and black trousers. At the end of the performance, she dropped the microphone, unbuttoned her jacket and rubbed her growing baby bump with a huge smile as the crowd erupted.

Just Beyoncé, a live television audience and one perfectly timed reveal.
The camera quickly cut to husband Jay-Z in the crowd, where he celebrated alongside Kanye West as the arena reacted to the news.
Beyoncé was expecting her first child, Blue Ivy Carter, who would be born in January 2012.
The reveal was arguably the most defining moment of the night and a reminder of the powerful live awards-show television wields. This was the tail end of the era in which celebrities didn’t talk to us unless via a print magazine or Katie Couric interview. Hard to imagine now in a society where celebs routinely announced major life updates directly to millions of followers. Then, the VMAs still functioned as one enormous cultural stage.
And Beyoncé knew exactly how to use it.
She performed a song about love, opened her jacket and let the image speak for itself.
Sometimes the biggest pop culture moments really do require nothing more than perfect timing.
