Anna Sui’s Perfume Bottles Are Tiny Works of Art

There are perfume bottles you tuck away in a bathroom cabinet, and then there are Anna Sui perfume bottles. For decades, the New York designer has packaged her fragrances in bottles so fantastical that throwing one away almost feels criminal. Fairies perch atop glass bottles. Mermaids rise from ornate golden caps. Handbags, hot-air balloons and ice cream sundaes somehow become vessels for fragrance. In Anna Sui’s world, perfume has never been something that simply smells pretty. It should look pretty sitting on your vanity, too.
That philosophy feels perfectly at home within Sui’s larger universe. Her fashion has always embraced romance, nostalgia, fantasy and a little bit of eccentricity, and her fragrance bottles carry those same ideas into miniature form. Some are elegant while some are delightfully kitschy. Others look as though they were plucked from a fairy tale.
More than ordinary beauty packaging, they’re tiny works of art. These are some of our favorites.
Anna Sui Classic
Before the mermaids, fairies and miniature desserts came the bottle that established the Anna Sui fragrance universe. Her original perfume arrived in an ornate black bottle that looks more like something discovered on an antique vanity than traditional late-’90s beauty packaging.
Filled with purple fragrance and surrounded by intricate black detailing, the bottle captures two sides of Sui’s aesthetic particularly well: femininity and a slightly gothic sensibility. Even decades later, it feels unmistakably hers.
Sui Dreams
Leave it to Anna Sui to turn a handbag into a perfume bottle.
Introduced around the turn of the millennium, Sui Dreams came packaged in a turquoise glass bottle shaped like a tiny purse, complete with an elaborate silver-toned handle. It’s playful without abandoning the ornate detailing found throughout Sui’s work.
Before beauty packaging became something routinely designed with social media shelves and #shelfies in mind, Sui was already creating fragrances that practically begged to be displayed.
Dolly Girl
If any bottle captures the wonderfully strange side of Anna Sui, it might be Dolly Girl.
The fragrance arrived in a sculptural bottle shaped like a doll’s head and shoulders, complete with illustrated eyes, lashes, rosy cheeks and bright lips. Depending on your perspective, she’s either adorable, slightly surreal or both. And that’s precisely what makes her memorable.
Dolly Girl feels like a tiny time capsule of the playful, hyper-feminine beauty culture of the early 2000s. It wasn’t designed to quietly disappear among a collection of minimalist bottles. She was supposed to be noticed.
Secret Wish
Make it stand out
Secret Wish looks like it belongs somewhere between a vanity and a fairy garden.
Its aqua-colored glass is topped with a translucent fairy sitting delicately atop a frosted orb, transforming an otherwise elegant fragrance bottle into something straight out of a storybook.
There’s an innocence to the design that distinguishes it from Sui’s darker, more rock-and-roll creations. Yet it still belongs unmistakably to the same universe. Anna Sui has always understood that femininity doesn’t have to mean just one thing. Sometimes it wears black lace. Sometimes it has fairy wings.
Fantasia
With Fantasia, Anna Sui didn’t simply put a decorative cap on a bottle. She put a golden unicorn on it.
The fragrance leans fully into fantasy with an ornate bottle crowned by the mythical creature, while the accompanying packaging features stars, florals, and swirling illustrations. The result feels less like something picked up from a fragrance counter and more like a little treasure brought home from an imaginary kingdom.
It’s gloriously excessive, which is exactly why it works.
Sky
Anna Sui apparently looked at the traditional perfume bottle and thought: What if it were a hot-air balloon?
Sky is one of the most imaginative examples in her fragrance archive. Pink fragrance sits inside an elaborate gold structure resembling a miniature balloon floating above its basket. It’s romantic, fanciful and almost absurdly pretty.
More importantly, it demonstrates what makes Sui’s approach to fragrance packaging so interesting. The bottle doesn’t merely decorate the scent. It helps create an entire world around it.
Fantasia Mermaid
Fantasia Mermaid takes us underwater.
The turquoise glass bottle features intricate gold detailing and an elaborate sculptural mermaid rising from the top, seahorse in hand. There’s something wonderfully old-fashioned about it, as though it could have been discovered among the curiosities inside an eccentric collector’s dressing room.
It’s another example of Sui’s ability to embrace fantasy without apologizing for it. There are no restrained cylinders or anonymous beige bottles here. This is perfume packaging with a personality.
Sundae Pretty Pink
And then there’s a perfume bottle shaped like an ice cream sundae.
Sundae Pretty Pink is unabashedly adorable: a pastel confection topped with pink “icing,” sprinkles and a bright red cherry. It could easily be mistaken for a tiny toy sitting on a dressing table.
It also represents something increasingly rare in luxury beauty: a willingness to be silly. Not ironic, minimalist, or painstakingly understated. Just fun.
Perhaps that’s the secret behind Anna Sui’s best perfume bottles. They aren’t trying to disappear seamlessly into an immaculately curated bathroom. They’re designed to make you smile.
Anna Sui has spent decades building a world where Victorian romance can mingle with rock-and-roll, fairy tales can coexist with downtown cool, and something can be beautiful precisely because it’s a little over the top.
Her perfume bottles may be much smaller than the clothes that walk down her runway, but the philosophy behind them feels remarkably similar.
Beauty doesn’t always have to whisper. Sometimes it can arrive as a purple potion, a tiny handbag, a doll, a fairy, a golden unicorn or an ice cream sundae with a cherry on top.
