C.Z. Guest dressed for a life that included both society’s most exclusive parties and afternoons in the garden. Now, a new exhibition invites visitors inside her wardrobe. At Atlanta’s SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film, “C.Z. Guest: Portrait of an American Style Icon” explores the clothes behind one of American society’s most recognizable women. Featuring more than 40 ensembles, photographs, and archival material, the exhibition considers how Guest built a signature style suited to every part of her life. Curated by Stefano Tonchi, the show moves beyond the glamorous image of a celebrated socialite to examine the practical decisions behind her wardrobe.
A writer, equestrian, gardening enthusiast, and member of Truman Capote’s famous circle of Swans, Guest inhabited several worlds—and dressed for each. Her November 1957 Town & Country cover captured that combination particularly well. Wearing a fur coat, she was photographed outdoors near a horse, bringing society glamour into a setting that reflected her love of country life. A copy of the issue appears in the exhibition. For Guest, an evening gown and a pair of sneakers both had their place. Her daughter, Cornelia Guest, emphasized that approach in an interview with Town & Country, describing a woman who valued clothes for their usefulness as much as their beauty.
The exhibition’s two principal themes, “Town” and “Country,” explore the settings that shaped Guest’s wardrobe, from parties to sporting pursuits and time spent gardening. Much of the clothing comes from the collection Cornelia donated to SCAD in 2008, with additional loans from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
A final room examines the habits that gave Guest’s wardrobe its consistency: monograms, favorite pieces acquired in multiples, and recognizable personal uniforms. These details offer a particularly intimate view of her taste. Beyond the individual garments, visitors can consider the system that made getting dressed distinctly her own.
Cornelia’s decision to place the collection at SCAD was rooted in education. She wanted the clothes to be shown, studied, and accessible to students, allowing future designers to learn from them. The exhibition also arrives amid renewed interest in Guest following Chloë Sevigny’s portrayal of her in the 2024 series Feud: Capote vs. the Swans. Here, the clothes themselves take the lead.
For anyone building a personal wardrobe, the appeal is easy to understand: knowing what works, wearing it often, and choosing clothes that accommodate a full life. Guest’s example invites a closer look at the everyday habits behind enduring style.
C.Z. Guest: Portrait of an American Style Icon is on view at SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta through February 21, 2027.
