Ralph Lauren’s Polo Pony is one of fashion’s most recognizable emblems. In pink, it carries a particular significance: a commitment to helping people affected by cancer.

Launched in 2000, Pink Pony is Ralph Lauren’s global initiative supporting the fight against cancer, with a mission centered on reducing disparities in care. Through fundraising, awareness, and a collection of clothing and accessories, the initiative supports efforts to make quality care more accessible to medically underserved communities.

The story began before the first Pink Pony collection. In 1989, Ralph Lauren and former Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham co-founded the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. The center was named for Lauren’s close friend Nina Hyde, the newspaper’s fashion editor, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

That personal connection helped shape a lasting philanthropic commitment. When Pink Pony launched in 2000, its pink-emblazoned T-shirts appeared on the runway during the designer’s Spring 2001 show, bringing the cause directly into the fashion conversation. Today, the Pink Pony collection brings that mission to familiar wardrobe staples, from polo shirts and hoodies to caps and accessories.

According to Ralph Lauren, at least 25 percent of the purchase price of each Pink Pony collection item benefits an international network of cancer charities. Within the United States, those contributions support the Pink Pony Fund of The Ralph Lauren Corporate Foundation. Select products carry a larger donation. Ralph Lauren currently identifies the Pink Pony Twill Ball Cap as an item for which 100 percent of the purchase price benefits its cancer-fighting mission. The collection also includes designated products supporting programs for screenings, early treatment, research, and patient navigation—the assistance that helps people find their way through the healthcare system.

The work extends beyond the clothes. Ralph Lauren’s cancer-care commitments have helped establish institutions including a center in Harlem, which opened in 2003 to serve medically underserved communities, and the Ralph Lauren Centre for Breast Cancer Research at The Royal Marsden in London, which opened in 2016.

For fashion lovers, the pink pony offers a recognizable way to participate in that continuing effort. Its meaning reaches beyond a seasonal color palette: it connects an everyday wardrobe choice to funding for cancer care, research, and support.

The Pink Pony collection is available through Ralph Lauren. Individual product descriptions provide the applicable donation details.
