Marjan Pejoski’s unforgettable swan dress brought wit, fantasy, and a little feathered rebellion to the 2001 Oscars, securing Björk a place in red-carpet history. On March 25, 2001, the Icelandic musician arrived at the 73rd Academy Awards wearing a creation that transformed a swan into eveningwear. Its long neck curled around her own, its orange beak rested against her chest, and its white body expanded into a frothy skirt. Amid Hollywood’s formal gowns and tuxedos, the effect was wonderfully unexpected. Björk was attending as an Oscar nominee for the music of “I’ve Seen It All” from Dancer in the Dark.

The dress balanced theatricality with delicacy. A sheer, sparkling foundation let the sculptural white swan dominate, while layers of tulle gave the skirt its buoyant volume. White strappy heels completed the ensemble, leaving the bird to do most of the talking.
There was something balletic about the silhouette, but the swan’s unmistakable head interrupted any expectation of conventional prettiness. The dress had humor and asked the viewer to participate in a fantasy. And perhaps to relax a little about what belonged at the Oscars. Björk extended that fantasy with an egg-laying performance on the carpet.

Not everyone appreciated the joke. The swan dress attracted ridicule and became a target for red-carpet commentary. Its departure from familiar Hollywood glamour was central to the controversy—and, ultimately, to its staying power. Apparently, Hollywood could handle a plunging neckline more easily than a swan with a sense of humor. Björk brought a little whimsy to an evening that took its dress code very seriously, and ruffled a few feathers in the process. (Pun intended).
Pejoski, for his part, wasn’t losing sleep over the reviews. Speaking to British Vogue that summer, he made it clear that pleasing everyone had never been the assignment. The swan certainly hadn’t come to blend in.
A few ruffled feathers later, Björk’s swan has officially nested in The Styled Chat’s Fashion Hall of Fame.
