Halle Berry looked as if she had stepped straight out of a fairy tale at the New York premiere of Introducing Dorothy Dandridge.

For the occasion, Berry wore a custom Bradley Bayou creation in the dreamiest combination of pale yellow and blush pink. The look paired a structured satin corset with a delicately embellished lace bust and a voluminous sheer skirt that floated around her as she made her way down the red carpet.

It was romantic and sexy with a spoonful of whimsy. More than two decades later, it remains one of those deliciously late-’90s red carpet moments that deserves another look.

The magic of Berry’s Bradley Bayou look was in its contrasts. While the fitted corset brought structure to the otherwise delicate ensemble, with visible boning sculpting Berry’s waist, lace, the beading and ultra-thin spaghetti straps softened the lingerie-inspired bodice.

And we can’t forget the skirt.

Layers of sheer blush fabric fell from the waist, opening at the front to reveal another pale yellow layer underneath and Berry’s legs as she walked. Delicate embellishments along the hem tied the skirt back to the ornate detailing of the corset.

The combination gave the outfit an almost deconstructed princess-gown quality. There was the sweeping skirt and romantic pastel palette of a fairy-tale dress, but instead of a traditional fitted bodice and ball gown, Bayou gave Berry exposed corsetry, transparency, and plenty of skin.

Even the accessories stayed inside the fantasy. Berry carried a tiny coordinating yellow evening bag and finished the look with delicate metallic strappy sandals and diamond studs. Her hair styled in soft finger waves certainly played its role as well.

The occasion made the fashion moment even more meaningful.

Berry had spent years trying to bring the story of Dorothy Dandridge to the screen before Introducing Dorothy Dandridge ultimately found a home at HBO. Berry both starred in and executive produced the film, portraying the groundbreaking actress whose career had opened doors for generations of Black performers who followed.

Dandridge became the first Black woman nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress following her performance in 1954’s Carmen Jones. Berry would later make history herself when she became the first Black woman to win the category in 2002.

That makes the premiere photographs particularly special in retrospect. Berry was celebrating a woman whose Hollywood legacy would soon become intertwined with her own.

And she did it dressed like a princess.

The corsetry, pastel palette, sheer layers and tiny evening bag are unmistakably rooted in late-’90s fashion, yet there’s remarkably little about the ensemble that feels out of place today. The current fascination with exposed corsetry, lingerie dressing and sheer gowns makes the look feel ripe for rediscovery.

But perhaps its greatest appeal is simply that it was fun with no fear of looking overly feminine, overly romantic or even a little fantastical. Halle Berry didn’t just attend the premiere. She gave us a late-’90s fairy-tale fashion moment worthy of its own happily ever after.

Consider it inducted into Fashion’s Hall of Fame.
