Before celebrity couples lived on our timelines, they lived on E! News segments and glossy magazine covers at the checkout line. Once upon a time in 1989, a global star met a striking, statuesque actress on the set of Days of Thunder. Little did they know, they were stepping into what would become one of Hollywood’s most captivating relationships. Impossible to ignore, they didn’t just date, they also defined an era.
Throughout the 1990s, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were relationship goals before it became a cutesy hashtag. Their appearances were polished, intentional, and just elusive enough to keep the public intrigued. Hollywood was their stage. That mystique only deepened in 1999, when the husband-and-wife duo starred in Stanley Kubrick’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut. Watching them portray a married couple on screen while being one in real life added a layer of intrigue that few celebrity pairings have ever matched.
But all fairy tales have an ending. In 2001, after more than a decade together, the marriage ended just as quietly as it had begun. Officially citing “irreconcilable differences, ” some reports suggested Kidman felt uneasy with the Church of Scientology, but the truth has always remained just out of reach. While we may never get the full story of why things ended, we’ll always have the glamorous, composed images, frozen in time, of one of Hollywood’s greatest “It” couples.
