Romy and Michele Are Finally Getting the Sequel They Deserve
By Alexus Mosley
Romy and Michele are officially coming back.
After years of rumors, wishful thinking, and endless fan requests, the long-awaited sequel to the 1997 cult classic Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is officially in production. And what’s even better is original stars, Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, are both returning to reprise their roles as everyone’s favorite fashion-loving best friends.
The original film followed Romy White and Michele Weinberger, two 28-year-olds who concocted increasingly outrageous stories about their careers in an attempt to impress former classmates at their 10-year high school reunion. Along the way, the pair delivered one of the most quotable comedies of the 1990s, cementing themselves as pop culture icons in matching pastel outfits.
According to reports, the new film will be produced by 20th Century Studios and stream exclusively on Hulu as a Hulu Original. International viewers will be able to watch the movie on Disney+. The sequel is being directed and produced by Tim Federle, while Robin Schiff, who created the characters and wrote the original film, returns to pen the screenplay. Fans will be happy to learn that Sorvino and Kudrow aren’t the only familiar faces coming back. Returning cast members include Janeane Garofalo as Heather, Alan Cumming as Sandy Frink, Camryn Manheim as Toby, and Julia Campbell as Christie.
The sequel also welcomes several new additions to the cast, including Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham, though details about their characters remain under wraps. Behind the scenes, the film is bringing back some of the creative talent that helped make the original so memorable. Producer Laurence Mark and executive producer Barry Kemp return, while legendary costume designer Mona May is also back to help bring Romy and Michele’s signature style into a new era.
For fans who have spent nearly three decades quoting the film, recreating the iconic dance sequence, or debating whether Romy and Michele were actually cooler than everyone at their reunion all along, the announcement feels long overdue. Few comedies have maintained the kind of devoted fan base that Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion has enjoyed since its release. The film’s celebration of friendship, individuality, and unapologetic weirdness has only become more beloved with time.
