Selena Gomez & Cate Blanchett Are Teaming Up for a Very Strange New Film
By Alexus Mosley
Selena Gomez’s post-Disney career path continues to get more fascinating by the minute. The actress and singer is reportedly set to star alongside Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender in filmmaker Brady Corbet’s next feature, and the entire thing sounds like our kind of movie. Think: 1970s America, occult history, experimental filmmaking, and a runtime long enough to emotionally alter your life.
According to reports, Cate Blanchett confirmed she’s working with Corbet while speaking at a masterclass during the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend. While details surrounding the project are still mostly under wraps, early descriptions already have cinephiles spiraling.
Corbet reportedly described the film as an “x-rated” project that spans from the 19th century to the present day, though much of the story focuses on the 1970s. If that alone wasn’t enough to make filmtok lose its collective mind, the director also teased that the movie will explore American mysticism, occult belief systems, and spiritual movements throughout history. Naturally, the internet is already preparing itself for three and a half hours of unsettling visuals, cryptic symbolism, and at least one scene that will dominate discourse for weeks.
Corbet also shared that he’s been researching the history of occult movements in America and working with historian Mitch Horowitz while developing the film. “My new film is a film that is sort of about American mysticism and the history of the occult in America,” Corbet said, according to Deadline. “The film is really, really genre-defying,” Corbet revealed.
Selena Gomez being attached to a project this strange, ambitious, and auteur-driven feels like a fascinating next step in her career evolution. From sitcom star to beauty mogul to Cannes-adjacent prestige actress, Selena Gomez’s career increasingly feels impossible to categorize, keeping us all on our toes.
