JD and Usha Vance Welcome Baby Boy, the First Child Born to a Sitting Second Family in 156 Years

Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance have welcomed a new addition to their family, and in doing so, made a little bit of White House history.
On Sunday, July 19, the couple announced the birth of their fourth child together, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance, in Washington, D.C. According to reports, his arrival marks the first time in 156 years that a sitting second family has welcomed a child while in office. The last known instance occurred in 1870, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his wife, Ellen Colfax, welcomed their son during Colfax’s vice presidency.
The Vances shared the happy news in a joint statement released shortly after Alec’s birth.
“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother.”
The couple also expressed their gratitude to the medical professionals who cared for Usha and their newborn.
“The incredible military doctors and staff members of Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit have been a blessing. We are deeply thankful for all they have done for our family.”
Baby Alec joins the couple’s three older children: sons Ewan, 9, and Vivek, 6, and daughter Mirabel, 4, who are now officially big brothers and big sister.
