41 Years Ago, The Golden Girls Introduced Us to TV’s Most Iconic Friend Group

Forty-one years ago today, television audiences were introduced to Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia.
The Golden Girls premiered on September 14, 1985, and quickly became one of the most beloved sitcoms on television. Set in Miami, the series followed four women navigating friendship, dating, family, work and aging, all while sharing one very memorable house.
The cast included Bea Arthur as Dorothy Zbornak, Betty White as Rose Nylund, Rue McClanahan as Blanche Devereaux, and Estelle Getty as Sophia Petrillo. Dorothy was sharp and sarcastic. Rose was sweet, optimistic, and full of unbelievable stories from St. Olaf. Blanche was glamorous, romantic, and completely confident in her appeal. Sophia was blunt, mischievous, and always ready with a story of her own.

Together, they became one of television’s most unforgettable friend groups.
The series was also ahead of its time in the way it portrayed women over 50. Rather than pushing its characters into the background, The Golden Girls gave them full lives filled with romance, career changes, family drama, friendship, and plenty of fun. It tackled serious subjects too, including grief, illness, divorce, ageism, and loneliness, often balancing emotional storylines with the humor the series became famous for. And then, of course, there was the cheesecake.

Some of the show’s most memorable scenes happened around the kitchen table, where the women would stay up late eating cheesecake and talking through whatever problem had landed at their door that week. Decades later, that dynamic still feels familiar.
The jokes remain quotable, the characters are instantly recognizable, and the friendship at the center of the show is still what makes it work. Few sitcoms have managed to make growing older look quite as funny, stylish, and full of possibility.
Forty-one years after its premiere, The Golden Girls is still reminding us that sometimes the best thing you can have is a house full of friends, a little gossip and a slice of cheesecake.
